A Character Building Riddle to Ask Your Family at Dinner Tonight

Ask your family to answer this riddle:

"There is one thing that is common to every individual, organization, nation, and civilization throughout the world. One thing which, if removed, will destroy the most powerful government, the most successful business, the most thriving economy, the most influential leadership, the greatest friendship, and the deepest love.

On the other hand, if developed and leveraged, that one thing has the potential to create unparalleled success and prosperity in every dimension of life. Yet, it is the least understood, most neglected, and most underestimated possibility of our time.

What is it?

That one thing is trust." (Stephen Covey)

After they have the answer to this riddle, have a discussion about what happens to your family when there is a lack of trust.

Ask your kids, "What do family members do to tear down trust in the family?" Make sure this does not become an attack session. Don't make this personal. Make it more generic. For example, avoid answers like, "When Weston goes into my room without knocking!" Shift it to, "When people go into other people's room without knocking." Or "When people say mean things."

Ask your kids, "What things could we do to build more trust in our family?" Here you are looking for things like, keeping our agreements, being on time, right our wrongs, listen first, practice accountability, telling the truth and be encouraging of one another to name a few.

Ask, "How would it feel to be in a family that practiced trust building behaviors?"

End the discussion with asking each person (including mom and dad) what is one trust building behavior that they are willing to practice this week?
