Does Your Child Get Frustrated?
Does Your Child Get Frustrated? Micah flung his pencil across the room and said, “I can’t get this! I hate this!” Does this ever happen in your household? A frustrating situation seems to occur several times a day for most of us. Can you picture yourself struggling with frustrating situations today? Your child interrupts your work day, you have a disagreement with your partner, or a coworker doesn't do their job! Not learning the life skill of dealing with frustration can lead to your child giving up or worse, not even trying. Our challenge is not to protect our children from frustration by saying things like, “It’s hard. Let’s put it away for now.” We also don’t want to push our children by saying things like, “Winners never quit. Be a winner.” Nor do we want to give a lecture on their character flaws…”It’s not nice to use the word hate.” ( Have this discussion later when your child is calm.) Instead, we want to give our kiddos the tools to deal with frustration effectively, and even thrive during challenging situations. Parenting Practice
As a fun way to teach your child the tools to thrive during frustrating situations, have them type or write the following messages on small slips of paper. One message per slip.
With practice I can get this.
I have time to learn this new skill. I don’t have to hurry.
What is the next SMALL step I can take?
Learning new things can be hard, I am not alone in feeling this way.
I can take a break and come back to it.
I will stick with this for 5 more minutes.
My brain is growing from learning new skills.
I like new challenges.
Have your child add phrases that they would like to add. If they write it, they are more likely to own it and be more effective.
Put the slips of paper in a fun jar and have your child draw one of them the next time they get frustrated. Have them practice saying or doing what is on the slip. Ask your child how they feel when they try the new message. This helps them internalize what they are learning.
